The imagery and sensual language that Atwood uses here shows what this means to her. It seems like sex has, in a way, been replaced by this banned intellectual freedom. Offred is taking the details in this way and soaking up the wondrous feeling of scrabble because this game represents what this society is missing most: intellectual freedom and thought.
