Harvard is a place full of intellectual freedom and originality. New ideas are known to begin there, and even the word ‘Harvard’ is well known to represent intelligence. Atwood chose this location for Gilead because of the contrast between the two societies. Gilead bans any kind of intellectual and original thoughts, keeping them at bay with the threat of death or banishment, while Harvard encourages thought like this.
