          In the end of 1984, everything is taken from Winston and Julia. Every belief and thought, and even their love and loyalty for one another was tortured out of them. In this scene, Orwell foreshadows their fate. Early on in 1984, Winston and Julia realize that with their rebellion, they might as well be dead. They have accepted the fact that they will eventually be caught and killed. So even this saying, “we are the dead,” that Winston and Julia repeat often when they are alone together was taken and turned against them.
